List of Medical Universities in Malaysia

Malaysia is located in Southeast Asia, north of Indonesia and Singapore and south of Thailand. It has a good reputation for its region when it comes to higher education, welcoming a total of 30,000 international students from over 100 countries. The reputation of its medical universities is fast improving with many forming links with UK and other international universities. The relatively low costs of studying in Malaysia is proving attractive to prospective Western students.

Penang Medical College

  • Penang Medical College (PMC) was founded in 1996 and works in conjunction with two Irish medical colleges, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD). Students at the Malaysian college undergo two and a half years of pre-clinical training at either of these Irish universities, so they have a thorough grounding in biomedical sciences. After this they return to PMC where they undergo the rest of their degree. They remain as registered students of either RCSI or UCD, however. The clinical training at PMC takes place on campus as well as at Penang General Hospital and the Seberang Jaya Hospital. Departments in the school include Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, General Practice, Public Health and Epidemiology, and Anesthesia. Students who complete degree courses at PMC are awarded with degrees of the National University of Ireland as well as the Licentiates of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

International Medical University, Malaysia

  • The International Medical University was established in 1992 and was the first private medical educational college in Malaysia. Today it combines its courses with other universities across the world in institutions in Australia, Canada and the UK. To help with this international approach English is used as the main language during seminars and lectures. The university offers a range of medical-based courses including Medicine and Surgery, Dental Surgery, Pharmacy, Nursing, Psychology and Chiropractic Medicine. Students on the campus benefit from the university's range of facilities that include a clinical skills unit, nursing skills unit, library, computer laboratories, pathology laboratories, seminar rooms, fitness studio and a student lounge complete with satellite TV.

University of Malaya

  • Opening in 1965 the University of Malaya's Medical Centre offers students the opportunity to study degrees in Pharmacy, Biomedical Science and Nursing Science. In addition the university also runs a five-year undergraduate medical program that gives an MBBS degree. The university also offers a number of master's degrees under various medical specialities such as Master of Public Health, and Master of Pathology. Facilities on campus include a well-equipped medical library with a wide range of books, literature and medical journals, a medicine computer laboratory, a cafeteria, convenience store, drugstore and a fruit store.

List of Private Universities in Malaysia

Universities in Malaysia are divided into public, which are funded by the government, and private, which came into existence in 1996 with the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act.

Multimedia University

  • Multimedia University was Malaysia's first private university, offering both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Two-and-a-half year diploma courses and four-year degree courses require O Levels or A Levels, or the appropriate international equivalent like SAT scores. Students from more than 66 countries study at MU, which requires all students to have a strong proficiency in English.

Open University Malaysia

  • Open University Malaysia, located in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, was founded in 20000. It has the motto motto, "University for All," promoting for the ideal that all students who want to attend university should be able to, regardless of economic or social factors. Classes are available both in a traditional campus setting and through distance learning. Majors are divided among six schools: Business and Management, Science and Technology, Applied Social Sciences, Education and Languages, Information Technology and Multimedia Communication and Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. The university also offers 20 graduate-degree programs.

Nilai University College

  • Students at Nilai University College take classes in one of six disciplines: Allied Health Sciences, Business, Foundation Studies, Hospitality and Tourism, Humanities and Social Sciences or Science and Technology. The school encourages students to get involved outside of classes in recreational activities like talent nights, 27-hole golf and dance competitions. The majority of students live on the college's 105-acre campus.

International Medical University

  • The International Medical University was the first private medical college in Malaysia. A range of undergraduate and postgraduate tracks are offered, from traditional medical fields like Dentistry and Pharmacy to alternative treatments such as Chinese Medicine. Students also volunteer in community outreach through the "Kampung Angkat" project, which provides free health screening and education to a nearby orphanage.

Engineering Universities in Malaysia

Malaysia is a South East Asian country to the north of Indonesia and to the south of Thailand. It's higher education system attracts a large number of international students to its universities. A report in the country's Star newspaper revealed that in 2008, 65,000 foreign students came to Malaysia to study in its universities. The country is slowly becoming a regional hub of educational excellence with many top world universities such as Newcastle, Nottingham, Monash and Curtin all opening Malaysian campuses.

University of Malaya

  • The Faculty of Engineering in the University of Malaya was created back in 1956, making it one of the university's oldest. In 2010, the faculty offered a total of 12 undergraduate courses, in addition to five postgraduate ones through its six departments. Undergraduate bachelor of arts (BA) courses range from Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering to Computer Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering. The university also offers a doctorate program in engineering and four master's programs.

Monash University

  • Australian Monash University opened its Malaysia campus in 1998. 12 years later, in 2010, the university's School of Engineering had approximately 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students studying a range of bachelor, master (MA) and doctorate programs. The School of Engineering offers four, four-year BA degrees including Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering.
    Students studying these degrees have the choice to complete these programs in Malaysia or transfer part of the coursework to the university's campus in Australia. Postgraduate students can choose between two postgraduate programs: master of engineering science and a doctorate program.

Universiti Malaysia Pahang

  • Universiti Malaysia Pahang was set up in 2002 by the Malaysian government due to the need for a new public technical and engineering university. Established as University College of Engineering and Technology, the institution changed its name in 2006 to Universiti Malaysia Pahang to avoid confusion regarding its university status. As its name suggests, the engineering university is located in the state of Pahang on the country's east coast. As of 2010, the institution offered 22 degree programs and five diplomas at undergraduate levels, in addition to a number of master's and doctorate programs. Seven faculties at the university range from Electrical and Electronics Engineering to Computer Systems and Software Engineering and Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering.
    The university also has a center for Modern Languages and Human Science and a Center for Technology Management. Students can make use of the facilities on the campus which include a library, labs, mosque, cafeteria, wireless Internet access and a range of sports amenities such as a gym, badminton courts and basketball courts.
