Engineering Universities in Malaysia

Malaysia is a South East Asian country to the north of Indonesia and to the south of Thailand. It's higher education system attracts a large number of international students to its universities. A report in the country's Star newspaper revealed that in 2008, 65,000 foreign students came to Malaysia to study in its universities. The country is slowly becoming a regional hub of educational excellence with many top world universities such as Newcastle, Nottingham, Monash and Curtin all opening Malaysian campuses.

University of Malaya

  • The Faculty of Engineering in the University of Malaya was created back in 1956, making it one of the university's oldest. In 2010, the faculty offered a total of 12 undergraduate courses, in addition to five postgraduate ones through its six departments. Undergraduate bachelor of arts (BA) courses range from Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering to Computer Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering. The university also offers a doctorate program in engineering and four master's programs.

Monash University

  • Australian Monash University opened its Malaysia campus in 1998. 12 years later, in 2010, the university's School of Engineering had approximately 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students studying a range of bachelor, master (MA) and doctorate programs. The School of Engineering offers four, four-year BA degrees including Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering.
Students studying these degrees have the choice to complete these programs in Malaysia or transfer part of the coursework to the university's campus in Australia. Postgraduate students can choose between two postgraduate programs: master of engineering science and a doctorate program.

Universiti Malaysia Pahang

  • Universiti Malaysia Pahang was set up in 2002 by the Malaysian government due to the need for a new public technical and engineering university. Established as University College of Engineering and Technology, the institution changed its name in 2006 to Universiti Malaysia Pahang to avoid confusion regarding its university status. As its name suggests, the engineering university is located in the state of Pahang on the country's east coast. As of 2010, the institution offered 22 degree programs and five diplomas at undergraduate levels, in addition to a number of master's and doctorate programs. Seven faculties at the university range from Electrical and Electronics Engineering to Computer Systems and Software Engineering and Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering.
The university also has a center for Modern Languages and Human Science and a Center for Technology Management. Students can make use of the facilities on the campus which include a library, labs, mosque, cafeteria, wireless Internet access and a range of sports amenities such as a gym, badminton courts and basketball courts.
