At the meeting where Ph.D. Ion Smedescu announced the founding of the Romanian-American University, before the mass-media and Mrs. Agata Kooperman, cultural attaché of the USA Embassy in Bucharest, Mrs. Kooperman agreed with the creation and name of the University, recommending some universities in USA to be contacted and cooperate with.

It all started from the fact that in the United States of America the high education has as a support the general model of behavior of the American society based on the efficient organization of the activity, the perseverant sense of duty, cultivation of the working spirit, self-respect and respect for the others, honest spirit of competition, challenge the others and yourself.

The initiative for setting up the University belonged to Ph.D. Ion Smedescu, who is the founder and Rector of the University, active member of the American Academy of Sciences in New York, President of the Romanian-American Foundation for the Promotion of the Education and Culture, in the activities of which the University is integrated.
He is a member of the National Council of the General Association of the Romanian Economists and deputy director of the International Center of Biographies in Cambridge. He was awarded the title of "Man of the Year" by the American Institute of Biographies in USA in 2001, 2002 si 2003; the same institute awarded him the "American Medal of Honor ". He was also awarded the "Golden Medal of the Academy of Sciences from Brazil". In January 2004, as a sign of appreciation for the contribution to the promotion and development of the Romanian education and his whole educational and research activity, Ph.D. Ion Smedescu was awarded the National Order Faithful Service with the degree of Knight through a Presidential Decree.

Conceived as an alternative and complementary form to the public high education, the University has 6 faculties in its structure, among which 5 economical ones and a juridical one, that is: the Faculty of Internal and International Commercial and Financial Banking Relations, Faculty of Management-Marketing, Faculty of Internal and International Economy of Tourism, Faculty of Managerial IT, Faculty of Studies of the European Economic Integration, Law School.

Within the context of the reform imposed by the Bologna Process, the University pursued the increasing compatibility of its educational offer with that of the European education and has also achieved, through its actions, the opening of the integrated education (license - master – Ph.D.).

In order to achieve its mission and objectives, the Romanian-American University from Bucharest relies on a profitable collaboration with American universities, among which JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY, from the state of Virginia, AMERICAN UNIVERSITY from Washington D.C., Northern UNIVERSITY - TEXAS, BARRY UNIVERSITY - Florida, DE SALLES UNIVERSITY - Pennsylvania, long term agreements being concluded with them, as well as universities and institutions from Europe, South America (Brazil). Many students received scholarships in USA, including those for Master, some of them remaining part of the University’s teaching staff.

Based on the long term agreement concluded with James Madison University, the Romanian-American University benefits from the presence and contribution of some prestigious American professors, study books and other materials, scholarships for the students; organizes visits of some American students in historical and tourist Romanian, with the purpose of introducing them to our country; organizes mutual symposiums and educational scientific sessions, exchange of experience between the members of the teaching staff.
The Chancellor of James Madison University, from the state of Virginia, Ph.D. Ronald Carrier has honored several times the invitation to visit the Romanian-American University in Bucharest in order to see directly the preoccupations of our students and teaching staff. For the support given to the Romanian-American University, Mr. Ronald Carrier, as a Rector of James Madison University was elected president of honor of the Romanian-American Foundation for the Promotion of Education and Culture.
We also mention the contributions of Mr. Stephen Bowers and Ph.D. Bijan Saadatmand, who had a fundamental contribution to the creation and development of the cooperation between the two institutions. This rich cooperation between the two universities has also gradually got new aspects due to the permanent support of Mr. Linwood Rose, President of James Madison University and Mrs. Lee Sternberger, Director for the International Relations. This way permanent exchange of students and professors were possible, insuring a greater access of the Romanian-American University to the American academic environment.

The accreditation of the University allowed the introduction of a new strategic approach meant to consolidate the existing research capacities and launch this activity again through the active involvement of the teaching staff and students in the internal and international Programs and Grants. In the 15 years of activity, the Romanian-American University has proved a provider of education, offering the Romanian society over 12.000 graduates that can be met in most administrative structures, in different companies, banks and social-cultural institutions.

In favor of the idea of curricular reform going on within the University a series of fundamental arguments have always existed:
# performance,
# equal chances,
# compatibility with the European and American systems of education,
# insurance of a logical order of the subjects of study,
# consolidation of the transferable system of credits.

In order to increase the performance of the teaching staff, the Senate of the University has set up criteria of evaluation on a yearly basis, taking into consideration the quality of the lectures, seminars and practical assignments, the research activity and faithfulness to the University. To the evaluation of the teaching staff there is also the contribution of the students. The promotion of a partnership attitude between the teaching staff and the students leads to the achievement of a participative, challenging and pragmatic education, based on knowledge, agreement and dignity, respect and encouragement for each student. Thus, a special attention is given to the development of the students’ creativity, to the stimulation of opinions, attitudes and convictions based on the promotion of the national and international values.

By everything that the Romanian-American University has accomplished so far, it has consolidated its position in the national system of education, and its activity has got new aspects, necessary in the context of a harsh competition on the highly qualified labor market from Romania and all over the world. The accomplishment of its mission and objectives has contributed to the increase of its fame among the Romanian universities, proving to be a viable alternative to the public high education.
