DHAKA: The High Court on Monday (July 24) stayed the process of holding the July 29 special general meeting of Dhaka University senate for electing a panel to appoint a new vice chancellor.
An HC bench comprising Justice Tariqul Hakim and Justice M. Farooq passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by 15 registered graduates including DU teachers.
Deputy Attorney General Amatul Karim said the court also ordered the authorities concerned to take steps for constituting a full-fledged DU senate under Section 20(1) of Dhaka University Order 1973.
At the same time, the court issued a rule asking the authorities to explain why the move to hold senate special general meeting without forming the full-fledged body should not be declared illegal.
Dhaka University vice chancellor, two pro-vice chancellors (academic and administration), registrar and secretary to the education ministry have been made respondents to the rule.
Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud along with Barrister Mostafizur Rahman Khan moved for the writ petition in court while lawyer AFM Mejbah Uddin moved for DU.
