Established in the year 1955, on the 24th of December, under the Jadavpur University Act, the mother body of the Jadavpur University was known as the Bengal Technical Institute. This was an institute of its kind in India to bring in Chemical Engineering as a field of study.

The alumni association of the Jadavpur University has branches all over the world in countries like UK, the USA, Canada and UAE.
Apart form awarding degrees the Jadavpur University also encourages education for professionals who wish to continue their education after a certain period of time. For that there is a separate department known as the Adult & Continuing Education and Extension Centre.
The students can also enroll themselves in research programmes undertaken by the Jadavpur University in subjects such as Refugee Studies, Marxian Studies, Indology, Plasma Studies, European Studies, Knowledge Based Systems and many more
The teaching faculty of this university boasts of great authors like Buddhadev Bose and Nabaneeta Dev Sen and also Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize winner.
