Bangalore University

Bangalore University, Bangalore was established in Bangalore City as a subsidiary of Mysore University in 1964. The University was started so as to include institutions of higher education located in the Bangalore city, rural Bangalore and Kolar districts. Initially two premier institutes, the Central College (CC) and the University Vivesvaraya College of Engineering formed the nucleus of the Bangalore University. The Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka state of India; it is also called IT Capital of India.

Since its start the University is engaged in offering postgraduate courses and conduct research programs through different departments and faculties. It started offering Honors courses in 1965. Three years honors programs for undergraduate students in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics and Zoology attracted brilliant students. Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree were awarded in these subjects.

The Bangalore University has grown manifold in terms of size and strength. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has bestowed Affiliating Rights to Bangalore University. The University has provided affiliation to many numbers of colleges and PG Research centers. Many numbers of programs and courses are offered through various faculties, affiliated colleges and research centers.It mainly caters educational needs of students residing in Bangalore and Karnataka, but opens its doors to all Indian nationals and foreign students.

The main campus of Bangalore University named ‘Jnana Bharati’ (JB) acquires 1100 acres of land housing postgraduate departments, Directorates, Centres of higher learning, Gandhi Bhavan, Ambedkar Bhavan, NSS Bhavan, Outdoor Stadium and other support services. The Central College campus retained as the city campus houses the main examination wing with the office of Registrar Evaluation, city offices of the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Finance (Examination part), Academic Staff College, Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education Centre, Directorate of College Development Council, a few postgraduate departments and support services.

The Central College campus also has Central College Cricket Pavilion; the first Karnataka State Cricket Association was established here and trained many cricketers of national and international repute. Since 1973, the Bangalore University is operating from both the centers, viz; the Central College and the Jnana Bharati (JB).

The Bangalore University aims to be a Federal University in future. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) have given 5 star status to Bangalore University in 2001. The University has 6 faculties, viz; Arts, Commerce & Management, Education, Engineering, Law and Science. In total, 41 post graduate departments functions under different faculties.

The Bangalore University has established one postgraduate center at Kolar in 1994 – 95. At present, Bangalore University has 3 constituent colleges, and 473 affiliated colleges, which includes 88 post graduate colleges. Besides, it also has many Centers and Directorates for higher education and research.

The courses offered from Bangalore University are in high demand among knowledge seekers. Since offering education to everyone is not possible from direct classrooms, the University has established Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education. The directorate offers 28 courses in total viz; under graduate, postgraduate, PG Diploma and Certificate. During present academic cycle 18698 students are enrolled in various courses.
 
Bangalore University in Bangalore is popularly known as BU. It was founded in the year 1964. The degrees offered by the University of Bangalore are recognized as a symbol for higher standard of education and useful in the professional field as well. Bangalore University has been accredited with five star status by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2001.

Hostels

Bangalore University is not a fully residential institution. The university has limited number of hostels, which cannot cater to entire student community of the university. However, Patrons build many hostels in Bangalore in which outside students can seek residency. The Jnana Campus has 7 hostels; Student pursuing Postgraduate Programs can stay in 4 hostels, 1 hostel is exclusively reserve for women candidates. 1 hostel exclusively functions for College of Physical Education Students and 1 hostel for Department of Civil Engineering students. The University Law College and University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering has 1 hostel each in their vicinity. There is 1 Hostel in Jayanagar for University Law College students. Hostels are also attached for men and women for Postgraduate centers at Tumkur and Kolar. The hostels attached with Central College and to the University Visveswaraya College of Engineering were home for many renowned statesmen, politicians, scientists, engineers and sportsmen.

Foreign / NRI Admissions

Foreign / NRI students seeking admission into Bangalore University can download the prescribed application form for admission from university official website www.bub.ernet.in and apply before 30th April of the year of admission.
