About University
Girne American University was founded in 1985 as an independent, non-profit institution of higher education. From its establishment, the university has focused on providing access to an American-style higher education to the widest possible group of motivated learners. In charting its course for the next century, GAU will continue to be guided by this special mission.
To serve its central purpose, GAU uses a wide range of strategies: it fosters a variety of instructional approaches, it encourages scholarships, engages in collaborative community services, and empowers its constituents to become responsible citizens in an interdependent, pluralistic, global community.
Since 1985, GAU has grown in its understanding of itself, as a modern University. Although geographically dispersed, GAU is one University.
Today GAU has a clear identity as a Traditional University with a non-traditional set-up. Over the next five years, it will further transform itself into a knowlege age University. Programmes at GAU will increasingly offer students the opportunity to experience and explore the interchange of theory and practice through technology and service-learning opportunities.
The Chancellor setout the vision of the University to live up to its potential of becoming the premier institution serving the educational needs of young academics so as to become the university of their choice. Pursuit of this goal has made GAU distinctive, the University, will continue its efforts to cement its relationship with both young and adult learners, so that the University, and its programmes are the first choice of students seeking education.
GAU has place many of its programs online. It will also enter into partnerships with businesses and schools to provide tailored professional development online.
GAU recognizes that computer technology has made the home and the workplace the most convenient sites for education. This same technology provides the University with a newly established core value of access.
For the linkage to be meaningful, especially at work, these learning opportunities; must be available when the student wishes to access
GAU’s goal is to become a University with and without walls, a University located in time and place but unhampered by constraints of either in the fulfillment of its mission. To do this, GAU must maintain constant awareness of the impact of technology and how it changes knowledge and learning. GAU will evaluate its courses, and programs to be sure the curriculum and learning strategies reflect these changes.
As a knowledge - age University, GAU will strive to empower its graduates in the new workplace. Through their educational programes, students will maximize their abilities to confront a problem when faced with unfamiliar situations and to work effectively towards a solution, and to apply knowledge to complex situations. Graduates will be encouraged to actively relate new ınformation to previous knowledge and experience, to search for patterns and underlying principles, and to check for supporting evidence when arriving at a solution.
As successful knowledge workers, who practice lifelong learning, our graduates will view the University as their constant partner.
GAU understands that change is persuasive, and the University by design is positioned to accept challenges and competition, associated with higher education in the 21st Century. By being open to continuous environmental changes, the University will achieve its goal of being the prominent University serving young leaders.
Mission Statement
Throughout its history, GAU has been guided by its focus on five core values: access, speed, relevance, value and community.
The American University is dedicated to making American model learning opportunities accessible throughout life and to making them challenging and relevant to a diverse population of young adults. Its aim is to make possible an education that is at the same time both accessible and excellent. It does this through exceptional management of the University operations and resources, innovative delivery systems, student services and relevant programmes that are learner-centred, success-oriented and responsive to technology.
In support of its mission, a programme has been initiated to transform all courses into digital format. This effective format for course presentation is a practical expression of one of the University’s core values - that of providing access to higher education. The format helps students to complete their programmes expeditiously, thus reflecting another core value of speed.
Another aspect of speed is the ability to make adjustments in the curriculum to keep abreast of developments in each field. In this way The American University is able to offer new programmes promptly when new needs and opportunities present themselves. This responsiveness supports the core value of relevance. Even as GAU works to provide programmes that are current and relevant it also strives to provide them at an affordable price so that the student receives value.
As GAU has matured the University has recognised that it cannot succeed without a sense of community. This it strives to achieve by creating an atmosphere of mutual respect, openness, honesty and attentiveness to the core values. The University has made significant progress in creating such a community among its members and it has thereby created opportunities for students to gain an appreciation of their own role in the community by building experience at national and local and international level.
At The American University we strive to reach the unreachable, to provide learning and to encourage educational development worldwide.
History
GAU was founded in 1985 and has grown from its small beginnings with just seven students to being the 6,000 strong university that it is today only 22 years later. From its very inception, GAU has maintained close contractual ties with universities in North America and Europe. GAU was one of the first university in Cyprus to receive recognition from YOK (Turkish Higher Education Council). This was followed by recognition from YODAK (Higher Education Council of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). These required national accreditations were followed by a number of program accreditations and international recognitions. In June 2007 we celebrated our 19th graduation commencement when more than 300 graduates earned their degrees, who will go on to advanced studies or to excellent jobs in Europe, the region and the World.
In 1995 GAU started its expansion into the international higher education sector. Since then educational partnerships have been developed in India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, the USA, the UK, the Czech Republic and Hong Kong. These partnerships include student and faculty exchanges and the opportunity for students to experience different cultures and learning experiences.
The initial vision of the founders was to establish GAU as the pre-eminent institution of higher learning for the professions. The university now includes degree offerings in Business, Banking and Finance, Marketing, International Relations, Political Science and Public Administration, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Communications and Education.
In the year 2000 the GAU Ten Year Strategic Plan was published. It envisions a campus with 10,000 students by the Fall of 2010. They will be supported by a balanced set of facilities and faculty. Throughout its 21 years of development the management, faculty and staff of the university have balanced the requirements for growth, with the need for high levels of quality, both in teaching and in the overall experience of each student.
Throughout its 22 year history, GAU has sought to optimize its use of the latest in technology and teaching methods. While we have one of the highest Ph.D. to student ratios, we also have the highest computer to student ratio. For the past five years the GAU library has been at the forefront of the revolution in library science; the implementation of digital library resources. Many classes now include Power Point presentations and MP-4 download versions of the lectures. The entire campus and all dormitories have WiFi throughout. GAU TV and Radio also broadcast selected lectures and seminars for student and faculty viewing.
The next ten years will be ones of further growth. The degrees offerings will continue to expand, with offerings in Marine Science, Transportation Management, and a range of two year degrees. GAU already has established itself in Istanbul and Izmir in Turkey for the purpose of providing many of its course offerings for the general public as well as for those interested in earning a full degree. New campus buildings for sports, administration and the dedicated teaching buildings for several existing faculty will be completed in 2008.
