Eastern University – A Profile

Eastern University was established in 2003 under the Private University Act 1992, as amended in 1998. It is approved by the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh and by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University was set up by Eastern University Foundation - a non-profit, non-political and philanthropic organization. Its founders include academics, chartered accountants, engineers, industrialists and retired civil servants. At present, the Foundation has 30 members. The governance of Eastern University is carried out as per the Private Universities Act of 2010 by several bodies: Board of Governors, Syndicate, Academic Council, Curriculum Committee, Finance Committee, Teacher Selection Committee and Disciplinary Committee.

Vision
The vision of Eastern University is to become a leading University in South Asia in its chosen fields of higher education.

Mission
Its mission is to be a "Center of Excellence" by setting a new standard of quality teaching and quality education in Bangladesh, keeping in view the challenges of the 21st century.

Goal
Its goal is to produce future leaders with knowledge and skills essential for leadership in country's private and public sector enterprises in the increasingly competitive and globalized environment.

Faculties and Departments
The University currently has four Faculties: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Faculty of Law. The Faculty of Arts has two Departments – Department of English and Department of Applied Linguistics and ELT (English Language Teaching). The Faculty of Business Administration has four major areas, namely, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management and Human Resource. A few social science courses are also offered by this Faculty . The Faculty of Engineering and Technology has two Departments, namely, Department of Computer Science & Information Technology and Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Approval of the Department of Textile Engineering is under consideration by UGC. The Faculty of Law is having undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Curriculum
Eastern University follows North American model of curriculum in the fields of Business Administration, Computer Science and Electrical and Electronics Engineering; the UK model in Law and English. The academic program is pursued through a framework of curriculum that includes splitting up of an academic year into three semesters: the Fall, the Spring and the Summer.

• BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) Program

- MBA Executive

Faculty of Engineering and Technology
• B.Sc. CSE (Computer Science and Engineering)
• B.Sc. CSIS (Computer Science and Information System)
• M.Sc. CSE (Computer Science and Engineering)
• B.Sc. EEE (Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
• B.Sc. ETE (Electrical and Telecommunication Engineering)

Approval for B.Sc. in Textile Engineering is currently under consideration by UGC. Other programs to be launched next include B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Architecture, B.Sc. in Pharmacy and Post-Graduate Diploma in Environment and Climate Change.

Students
The students admitted in the Eastern University come with a very good academic background. As many as 8644 students have been admitted till Fall 2010 since the beginning of the University. Out of these about 1200 have graduated. Other students are at various stages of their study.

Faculty Members
Eastern University hires top-of-the class, talented graduates as junior faculty, experienced teachers and researchers as senior faculty and professionally accomplished teachers and experts as part-time faculty. As of Fall 2010, the University has over 110 fulltime faculty members including a visiting professor from USA. In addition, there are 55 part-time faculty members.

Campus
The University campus consists of six large and spacious buildings - all located in the prime area of Dhanmandi and are easily accessible from any part of Dhaka and outskirts by public transportation as well as taxi cab, auto-rickshaw and rickshaw.
