Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) was established on 24 February 1971 under the Agricultural University Act 1971. The University became functional from 1st February, 1972. The primary objective of the University is to provide quality education in Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry including Veterinary and Dairy Sciences, Co-operation, Fisheries, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering, Home Science and other allied disciplines. The University building is situated at Vellanikkara in the Thrissur district on the National Highway (NH-47).
The University is known for being one of the best agricultural universities in India. Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) came into existence after the merger of existing two educational and 21 research institutes administered by the Departments of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of the Government of Kerala, in February 1971.The University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The University has given the responsibility by the government to conduct undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs in different disciplines of Agricultural Sciences.
KAU offers courses at Graduate, Post Graduate, and PhD level. The disciplines covered via its various courses include, Agriculture, and Allied Sciences. It offers post graduate courses in numerous fields, such as, Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Fisheries, Agricultural Statistics, Cooperation and Banking, Home Science (Food and Nutrition), and Agricultural Engineering and Technology.
